Spokane History

Spokane 's name comes from the language of the Spokane Native American tribe who still make their home in the area. The Indian word Spokanee, means "Children of the Sun".

The Spokane Valley’s roots date back to the days prior to 1873, when James N. Glover, the father of Spokane, traversed across the land on horse-back that belonged to the Spokane Native Americans who used the land for hunting and fishing. Glover purchased the land and sawmill that J.J. Downing and Seth Scranton had constructed on the edge of the Spokane River. Glover started a store and stable, that began the settlement of Spokane.

Large numbers of settlers soon followed as word spread of the beautiful country with its wooded lands and pristine waters. The discovery of silver succeeded in further luring families to the city in search of a prosperous venture. By 1889, Spokane’s population had reached nearly 20,000, truly a presage of the great future that lay ahead for the City of Spokane and the Spokane Valley.
